🇬🇹 Hola from Guatemala. We arranged a private tour, at $70 each, a fraction of the ship’s excursion price, with Jeff & Keith and Leigh & Rolf, through Shore Excursions Group, from the Puerto Quetzal port to the famous colonial city of Antigua, located at a cool 5,000 ft elevation vs the oppressive heat at sea level. The forecasted rain never materialized though the clouds hid the Volcan de Fuego volcano that forms the iconic backdrop seen from the city. However on our early drive up before the clouds set in we did get to see its steam and ash eruption, very cool. Our guide, Oscar, a former teacher, schooled us on Guatemalan history and how it relates to its former Capital of Antigua. He led us all over the charming city, explaining the significance of everything, then pointed us to his favorite less touristy place for authentic Guatemalan food, El Porton Tipico, which was delicious. We bought a colorful table runner from one of the many pushy street merchants but resisted the others. The drive each way was about 90 minutes, half of which was on a highway in terrible bumpy shape but the comfy AC’d Toyota van handled it well. Yet another awesome port day.
